From the Minister's Desk February 21, 2012
Good morning, everyone.
Thank you to everyone for the lovely plant arrangement as well as cards and well-wishes during my sick time. (The valentine card from the children in Kid’s Church was very cute and gave me a smile when I was feeling pretty glum.) I am back in the office this week and doing much better, though I still have some pain so I’m hoping to “ease into” things.
Please join us tonight for a delicious pancake supper between 5:30 and 7:00 pm.
Ash Wednesday service – please plan to attend this meaningful service tomorrow night, February 22nd at 7 pm to begin the season of Lent. The service lasts approx. half an hour and includes singing, prayers, a hand washing ritual, a time of quiet reflection and the imposition of ashes on your forehead or back of hand if you wish.
This Sunday we will mark the first Sunday of Lent with the sacrament of communion. Our focus passages are: Genesis 9: 8-17 and Mark 1: 9-15. The passage from Genesis tells the story of starting again within a relationship established with God by God. The Mark passage revisits Jesus’ baptism, temptation, and mission. The passages remind us that rebirth comes out of water. This connection to baptism, new life, new world, new beginnings has become a source of Christian hope. We are reminded that God is a God of continual renewal. Lent is a beginning of a journey still in process – ever evolving. Each year we make the Lenten journey and enter into the process of renewing ourselves and our faith. Where do you need renewal in your faith life, something new to emerge?
Book Study – there is still room in our book study of Desmond Tutu’s God Has a Dream: A Vision of Hope for Our Time. Our first session is March 1st at 7pm. Please let me know if you plan to attend.
Blessings everyone and I hope to see you soon.
